Well, evidence has come to light that suggests a PlayStation 5 Pro could be a real possibility.

Will There Be a PS5 Pro?

It would seem that Sony filed a patent application back in 2019 for a “scalable game console CPU/GPU design for home console and cloud gaming”.

It published the patent in July 2020, and the text in the patent presumably refers to the standard PS5. However, the operative word here is “scalable”. This means that Sony would be free to add or remove CPU and GPU components to make the device more (or less) powerful.

This means that there is potential for Sony to release a PS5 Pro in the future, with double the GPU, making it a significantly more powerful machine.

It could even mean Sony can also release a PS5 Lite, with scaled down specs, so don’t get your hopes up too much!

When Will Sony Release the PS5 Pro?

At the moment, we have no confirmation that Sony is working on a PS5 Pro. However, this patent suggests that there is an opportunity for the PlayStation 5 to get a pro upgrade in the future.

The PS4 saw release in 2013, with the PS4 Pro following in 2016. By these timelines, we can probably expect a PS5 Pro console in 2023. This is just an estimate based on Sony’s previous releases. Nothing is set in stone by the PlayStation creator as yet.

Wait Patiently for the PS5 Pro

All you can do now is wait patiently until Sony finally makes the announcement. In the meantime, you could always slake your next-gen thirst by investing in the PS5 Standard or Digital editions.

Next-gen has only just arrived, so there is likely to be a wait before Sony makes an improvement on the PlayStation 5 hardware.
